Last spring I had the opportunity to work Jay Livingston and Szifra Birke on their cover views for their book “In Tandem: Pedaling Through Life on a Bicycle Built for Two”. We found a convenient location near their home in Lowell MA for some views to demonstrate some of what it takes to work as a tandem bike team. With the help of artist and designer Lisa Hochstein and cover design by Kostis Pavlov the cover came to fruition. I couldn’t wait to read their story and even though I have know them both many years it was a wonderful informative look at what it takes to work together as a team in both their marriage and their cycling. To me it was a great love story, a romance, a touching story of couples plus a therapy guide list with bike mechanic’s tips and tricks. I can’t recommend this book enough. Kevin Harkins’ photograph changed our book cover from mundane to vital. It’s hard to find words to express adequate gratitude for his willingness to do this with relatively short notice, for the multitude of photos he took that we could choose from, for the great smiles when he got a shot that he thought was a good one, and much much more.
Kevin suggested the very cool idea of shooting at Tyler Park. It’s a stone’s throw from our house, a part of a route Jay and I use for so many of our rides, an Olmsted park, and an overall very special place .
As always, Kevin was easy to work with, suggested ideas and helped us relax.
