The Search for Stars Hollow

If you know about the TV show Gilmore Girls you know Stars Hollow is the home of the Mother and Daughter team of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore.

The town was loosely based on the the town of Washington Depot Connecticut and some of the surrounding area.

Way back in 2004 Janet and I were in Connecticut for a weekend away, she on interior design business and me just for the road trip.

We decided to take a side trip searching for the inspiration of the mythical town of Stars Hollow.

Washington Depot Connecticut was not what we expected.

I didn’t exactly find Luke’s Diner and there was no gazebo in the town common, but it was fun to visit and see what inspired one of my favorite TV shows.

We did find a little cafe and the post office, plus I had a nice conversation with the towns tree warden.

But the town at the time did not seem to be even aware of the notoriety from the show.

I learned all about it one night as I noticed my daughter watching the show and caught some of the banter and the quick repartee that ensued with the main characters.

It sounded like a script from the 1930’s movie episodes with Myrna Loy and William Powell in the Thin Man Movie series.

This was just the kind quick wit and humor I loved.

I became hooked.

Who were these Gilmore Girls and where is this Stars Hollow?

From then on I was a fan of the show.

It ran for seven seasons and has been off the air for almost 10 years.

But Netflix will bring about a new block of four episodes by the original writer Amy Sherman-Palladino.

The town of Washington Depot has recently had it’s own Gilmore Girls Festival with major media coverage and fans seem to be everywhere again.

I got a few shots back in 2004 still using film, black and white at that, and wanted to revive these images for the post.
