Ghost Story at the Lowell Cemetery

Shooting last week for an article about the Lowell Cemetery I came across this monument to the Bonney Family.

Clara Bonney Lilley is  a  local legend of ghost chasers.

While at the shoot my digital camera malfunctioned. It is believed the area has high EMF ratings and others have notice this phenomenon.

I found some information at this site http://darkofthemoon.wordpress.com/2008/12/19/witch-bonney/ .

Happy Halloween!

I’m the official tour guide of Lowell Cemetery and the Bonney monument is one of our most popular stops. It was a group of students from the nearby Sullivan Middle School who went on one of my first tours, who introduced me to the story with their “will we see Witch Bonney?” questions.

Every time I tell the story for visitors I do feel a bit guilty. My research discloses that the Bonney family members were prominent members of the community (they lived in the Battles House on Fairmount Street) and I’ve yet to find any evidence of witch-like behavior during their lives.

Oh, and sorry about your camera.

Fantastic picture. The monument is so beautiful and I visit a couple of times a year to see Clara and the Ayer Lion. The cemetery is amazing to walk through. Thanks for the mention.

That’s cool, Kevin! EMF – electromagnetic fields? Great pic.

I recently moved to Lowell and decided to visit the cemetery today. I didn’t bring my phone and somehow found my way having no knowledge of the city… This is a gorgeous cemetery and i arrived shortly before sunset . I wandered for a bit and could definitely sense. Something walking with me and satching. I used the wind.that kept blowing different ways and eventually found Bonney. It.was a surreal experience. I’ll definitely be visiting again soon…
